The birch played an important role in Germanic and Slavic folklore. It was consecrated to the goddess Freyja.
Freyja , in Old-Norse means ‘mistress’, is the name of the Norse Wanen goddess of love and marriage.
The custom of fetching a maypole from the forest and erecting it on the village square also dates back to this time.
It was used to bring the awakening spring into the village.
